Apple TV FAQ

Earlier in the week, we were invited over to dinner by some friends of ours. We had a great time, and my husband just couldn't stop talking about the media setup our friends had, complete with the Apple TV. It looked great, and that is even before all of the new features that are now available.

Also, now that Apple has announced a new price structure and a major software update to the device, I have been fielding many questions about the Apple TV. Here are some of the more frequently asked questions, along with their answers.

Do you need a special television to use Apple TV?

There are some requirement in television specifications for the Apple TV. You'll need a EDTV (Enhanced-Definition Television) or an HDTV (High-Definition Television). Some users have cheated the requirement with standard definition televisions that have component (red, green blue) inputs and a simulated widescreen mode.

What is the Apple TV?

The Apple TV is a compact device that allows you to wirelessly stream iTunes content, including your photos, music, videos, television shows, purchased movies and now rented movies from up to five computers (Macs or PCs) to your television. Software features allow you to create slideshows from your photos and set them to music. Apple TV does not play CDs or DVDs or allow you to record any content from your television. How much can the Apple TV hold?

Apple reports that the 40 GB hard drive in the Apple TV device can hold about 50 hours worth of movies and television shows, 9,000 songs, and up to 25,000 photos. In addition to the 40GB hard drive, a Apple TV device with a 160GB hard drive is also available. Some users have "hacked" the device and upgraded the hard drive, although this would void the warranty.
