Photos can have a major impact. They can communicate loudly to others, help you keep in touch with family and friends and may even win you an award or two. Here are some guidelines to cresting your own photo log.

First determine the parameters of your photo blog. Blog that have a theme or a direction (even if that direction is eclectic) always do better. People viewing the blog know what to expect, so you'll gather a following. And, the parameters will help keep you focused with new postings. Try one of the following ideas for your photo blog or create your own idea:

  • Your family life
  • Artistic photos
  • Scenes from around your town
  • Abstract images
  • Architecture
  • Eye-ball benders (take close up photos and ask readers to guess what they are)
  • Photos of gardens and flowers
  • Food
  • Your vacation or local trips
  • Crafts, such as knitting projects
  • Random photo of the day
  • Your pregnancy
  • Your baby or child
  • Reflections (photos taken in reflection from a mirror, body of water, a spoon, etc)

Next, determine if you want any text and if so, how much text. Do you want to let the photos speak for themselves? Do you want a one-sentence caption, or would you like to be able to write a short paragraph about the photo. Once you make this decision, stick with it.

Now let's talk about copyright. If you want to make sure that no one ever uses your original photos anywhere at all, make that clear on your photo blog. Again, that is a decision that you will need to make. It is also a good idea to include, as part of the photo, a line that has the copyright symbol and your name.
