Desktop Supercomputers And A Contest

The next generation of desktop computers just may be arriving soon. That is because developers at the University of Maryland engineering department have created a prototype for a supercomputer that is the size of an average desktop machine. Supercomputers that have speeds that are 100 times faster than standard desktop computers have been used for years for large applications on a massive scale. But, they take up equally large physical space. This is done by a technology known as parallel processing. Until now, it has been impossible to bring that power down to the desktop level because of programing complexities. … Continue reading

Do Computers Make Kids Dumb?

Yes, they do, at least according to a couple of researchers. The authors of the study are Thomas Fuchs and Ludger Woessmann of Munich University, and they conducted their tests way back in 2005. In the computing world, two years can be a very long time, but although the study is older, I think it is still pretty interesting. The study measured the performance of 100,000 pupils in 31 countries around the world and used the PISA, an international test geared for industrialized countries, to measure such things as analytical ability and general literacy. Students tested were all 15 years … Continue reading

Yes, I get that people are born every day and it stands to reason that there are babies right now being born on this illustrious day of February 29th. What I mean is that I just had never thought about it. And apparently, some patients who can choose their due dates (via scheduled c-section), are leaping at the chance to give birth to little leapers. Why Leapers Are … Continue reading
