Do You Need A Wireless Mouse?

by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger

A wireless mouse scores big on the coolness factor, but do you really need one? Well, let's take at the pros, cons and uses of a wireless mouse.

Wireless for gaming

A wireless mouse is usually marketed to gamers who don't want to be tied down in their gaming action by a cord. There are many a wireless mouse on the market with flashy paint and package to appeal to this group. Take the very successful Wii, for example, with it's wireless game controller. Of course those things do have a tendency to go flying out of hands and through windows by enthusiastic players. Gamers will want to make sure that they opt for a wireless mouse that delivers "immediate response time," and important feature in many arcade and shooting-type games.

A clean desk

A wireless mouse does provide a cleaner desk, since you are eliminating a cord, and if you have an optical mouse, a mouse pad, too. Some people do opt to use a mouse pad anyway, and if you have a glass surface, it is a must.

If you opt for a wireless keyboard (makes sense; many packages offer the keyboard and mouse together), the lack of cords really make a difference in keeping everything neat and out of the way. You can even store the mouse in a desk drawer, if you like. A wireless mouse also gives you the freedom to sit farther away from your computer in a variety of poses. Just don't tell your chiropractor. One downside of the "use your wireless mouse from anywhere" practice is that the wireless mouse tends to get lost in sofa cushions for days at a time.

Rock-a-bye-mousie

Some additional cons of the wireless mouse include the fact that it runs on battery power and therefore can go to sleep or shut off when battery power is low, or sleep to conserve power when it is not actively being used. For those of us used to a laptop, this might not be a big deal, but I think I would still find it annoying. Of course, my laptop comes with a touch pad, which I happen to love, eliminating the need for a mouse altogether.
