Viral Emails: Have You Seen the One About…?

Photo by Simon Stratford How many jokes, surveys, video attachments, and other miscellaneous “fun” stuff do you get in your inbox on a weekly (or maybe even daily) basis? I get tons. Most of it I automatically delete, but some I don’t. In fact, sometimes I even forward them, thus helping to make them “viral.” (In other words, the kind of email that spreads from inbox to inbox.) Here’s a few I’m guilty of spreading: Cute: Big Dog, Little Baby A little while back, Bailey’s “PopPop” forwarded me a picture of a huge black dog laying in a yard on … Continue reading

Netiquette: Part I – Using Proper Email Etiquette

These days, everyone is wired. Unfortunately, just because Great Aunt Mary learned how to send email and surf the web, doesn’t mean she picked up the basics of netiquette along the way. What’s netiquette, you ask? Netiquette is the unofficial rules defining proper behavior on the internet–whether sending mail, posting in online communities and message boards, or chatting. For the purpose of this blog, we’ll tackle the basics of email etiquette. We’ll cover more tomorrow. TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING Most people don’t appreciate being shouted at. Always use lower case unless you’re trying to show emphasis. Forwards … Continue reading

Manners Matter

Are you shocked by the social ineptitude of today’s youth? How many times have you been greeted by a tween offering an outstretched hand and a courteous, “Nice to see you again, Mrs. or Mr. So-and-so?” Or, answered your home phone and had your child’s friend identify himself and actually use the word “please” when asking to speak to your son or daughter rather than demanding to talk to Junior without even saying “Hello” first? Is the lack of etiquette exercised by today’s youth an epic parental fail? I am a stickler when it comes to manners; much to the … Continue reading

Diary of a Work at Home Mom Part 9

If you work from home and you want to take a vacation, sometimes it is possible to take care of business and get things to a point where you can leave it all at home for a week save for the occasional phone call or email. Many times though, in order to be able to take a vacation you must be willing to take at least a little work with you. This week, I am on vacation. My husband, my son, and I left Vermont last night and drove to Cape Cod to meet up with my dad, my sister, … Continue reading

Thank You For Calling, Have A Nice Day

Have you ever noticed that when you call various businesses in the course of your everyday life, each phone call is a unique experience that tells you a little bit about the business that you are calling? Sometimes your call is answered after only one or two rings by someone who is polite, knowledgeable, and helpful. You feel like that business cares about our needs, and you are able to get what you need out of the conversation. Other phone calls are really frustrating. You may get automated instructions that take you through twenty different questions before you finally decide … Continue reading

Scraplifting at Its Best

Have you ever heard the term scraplifting? If you are an avid scrapbooker like myself, you probably have. If you are just getting started, then it is a great way to spark your own creative energy! It basically means to look at someone else’s work and copy all or part of it for your own layout! I have to admit that I am a scraplifting junkie. I find so much inspiration looking at other scrappers’ layouts and then turning it into my own creation. There are some days where I can sit down and create a beautiful, original layout that … Continue reading

How to Celebrate Good Times on a Budget

Think you can’t afford to have fun on your birthday, anniversary, or other milestone? Think again. The month of May is chock full of special occasions for my family. From birthdays to Mother’s Day, Memorial Day to graduations, there’s no shortage of celebrations in the coming weeks. Typically, I would be concerned that all of these “big days” would put a big dent in our family’s budget, but as I mentioned in my previous blog, fortunately these special occasions are yielding some major savings. My email inbox is filled with deals from hotels, theme parks, and restaurants offering freebies and … Continue reading

Warning: Grapes and Raisins Deadly to Dogs Not an Urban Legend

Earlier this month a friend of mine (Lee, the dad of Mocha) sent me an email with this in the subject line: “If you have a dog…PLEASE READ!” That certainly caught my attention so I of course read it. The Warning The email was about a dog whose owners had to have him euthanized after he ate raisins, suffered raisin toxicity, and developed acute renal failure. The bulk of the email was rather technical and laced with veterinary jargon. Even so, the average dog owner could discern the gist: raisins and grapes are a big no-no treat for dogs. It … Continue reading

Is Your Boss a Psychopath?

He or she might not actually murder you, but they will stab you in the back when you least expect it. Corporate psychopaths, as they are known in business circles, are on the increase, and although not technically psychopaths, are certainly responsible for extreme stress levels in the workplace. Perhaps you work for one. Although most of these people would be classified as suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder, the term “corporate psychopath” has caught on. As with any narcissist, the corporate psychopath can be charming and gregarious, but it’s all superficial and used to project an image. There is an … Continue reading
