Parents Acting Like Teens

We all know on of those mothers who parade around in her teenagers clothes or the one whose home is the teenage hangout and she’s the life of the party. What about the dad who tries to use the latest catch phrases and tries to dance like his teenage son’s friends. If this sounds familiar because it is you… stop doing that. There is a commercial right now where the daughter says something to the effect of “mom, just because we’re FaceBook friends doesn’t mean you can write I love you all over may wall”, then the son says “dad … Continue reading

Facebook Quietly Welcomes Homeschoolers

Earlier this year when I mentioned that Facebook was not open to homeschoolers, I was mistaken. Facebook began accepting homeschoolers in June of this year. Before then and probably for some time after, homeschoolers who wanted to join the social networking group had to learn a very important teenage skill. Website hacking. Determined homeschool kids figured out that they could join under a local highschool and get their high school buddies to verify them. Others realized they could lie about their age since adults that are not affiliated with any educational institution have been able to join the site since … Continue reading

Texting Your Child While in School

During a particularly difficult time for my daughter, she sent me a text one day from school. She needed to tell me something. I responded, she responded, I responded…it turned into a 20 minute “texting” conversation. All of this was while she was in a class. I felt a twinge of guilt. Should I really be texting my daughter while she is in school? I’m sure most parents would say no. But the circumstances wouldn’t allow me to say, “We’ll talk about it later.” The reality is that she may not have been ready to discuss what she was. Now … Continue reading

Don’t Let The Media Parent Your Children

Sometimes I let Hailey watch too much TV. It’s an easy habit to fall into, especially when you are a single parent and there are so many things to do. You plop your child in front of the television, just for a few minutes so you can get something done and a habit is started. All the media in our children s lives is like another influence in the house. Our children are bombarded with messages and even if we are diligent about what they watch they may still see things that go against our values. Many shows that you … Continue reading

Divorce is Hard Enough

Tonight I was met by a sad reality. I was reading a post on Facebook by a young girl in high school. She expressed how much she hated going back and forth between houses because her parents were so offended every time she was with the other one. She was torn between two parents who both loved her dearly, but were putting their daughter in an uncomfortable position for any child to be in. My little brother has gone through the same thing growing up. He was so worried about things interfering with his dad’s time that he missed out … Continue reading
