Flat Screen TVs Go Wireless

If you haven't yet purchased that flat screen television, here is another reason to wait. It seems that technology is catching up with our dreams, ditching the ugly cords and allowing us to have flat screen televisions that are wireless.

Cords and wires have always looked out of place when combined with flat screen TVs. Here you have this nice, slim, wall-mounted piece of furniture that is aesthetically pleasing. That is until you take a look at the cords running down from it.

The television industry has been struggling with wireless technology for a few years. Up until this point, there were more than a few failed attempts. Now, though it seems that we may get wireless after all, just in time for the next holiday season.

At least three different technologies for wireless television, specifically for hi-definition sets, will be on display at Monday's Consumer Electronic Show, which takes place in Las Vegas.

WirelessHD, which incorporates Sony and Toshiba corporations seems to be the front runner. Intel plans on joining this group, making me wonder about a possible future link between the HD sets and computers. Will it be something along the lines of the Apple TV, which has unfortunately been dubbed a very hip paperweight?

Standards have been set in the technology that allow it to cover a large room, but won't let the signal be broadcast past 30 feet or so, to sooth the Motion Picture Association of America, which has concerns about pirating.

While this current technology is very promising, we must remember about all of those failed attempts that I mentioned above. Philips Electronics revealed a new technology for wireless streaming video at last year's show, promising to have it on sale in 2007. That idea was gone with the wind.
