Fun with Your Digital Camera

Want a fun little game that you can play with your digital camera? No, I don't mean a game that you can download or play on the Internet, but a game that requires nothing but the ability to take a photo.

We played this game last night as my youngest child, who is ten months was splashing around in his bath. My husband was busy in the other room, and my other two children had fun shuffling back and forth between the two of us with this game.

I call it "eyeball benders," after a feature I used to enjoy in Games Magazine, a game and puzzle magazine.

The object of the game is to guess what common objects are, based on their photos. The person doing the challenging tries to stump the other players. He or she picks an object and takes a photo of it that is either up close or in some way out of context in an effort to fool the person who is trying to guess. For example, the teeth of a comb taken up close without an reference to the handle of the comb makes it pretty difficult to guess what it is. You can get pretty creative with the photos you take.

The kids had a lot of fun choosing different things to take photos of, even in the limited space of the bathroom, and since everything is all digital, we just deleted the photos when we were done. Some of the real stumpers from last night included a reflection of the bathroom tile in the mirror and the inside of a toilet paper tube.

This game works best if your camera has a macro feature on it that will allow you to get really close to an object and still remain in focus, but the macro feature is not an absolute requirement. If you want to make the game even more challenging, try playing it outside or taking the photos ahead of time around the house so that the person who is guessing won't have a clue as to which room the objects were in at the time of the photos.
