It’s Crayola’s Birthday!

Happy Birthday Crayola! Crayola makes me smile.  I know it may sound a bit silly but bringing out a new box of Crayola crayons is one of my favorite things to do with my kids.  Afternoons spent with a new set of crayons, plenty of paper, and giggling kids, will always be some of my favorite memories. And yes, it must be Crayola.  We are crayon snobs in my home and only Crayola will do.  When my son was little he thought crayons equaled Crayola and was surprised to learn other crayon companies existed.  My oldest daughter used to organize … Continue reading

Mallory’s Birthday was on 12/12/12

There has been a lot of talk about 12/12/12 and how it will only happen once in 100 years. Wouldn’t it be cool if your twelfth birthday fell on that date? Mallory Taylor got to celebrate her “golden birthday” on December 12, 2012. A “golden birthday” might also be called a “lucky birthday”. It is the birthday when you turn the age that matches that day’s number. For example, let’s say that your birthday is on the fifth day of a certain month. The year you turn five is your “golden birthday”. It has been said that this is a … Continue reading

Happy Birthday Dylan

It’s nearly official. Dylan went to bed as a two year old, and when he awakens in the morning it will be his third birthday. Good night, toddler, good morning, preschooler. I’m not sure that I agree with all of those people who say that “it goes by so fast”, but that might be either because not enough time has passed and I’ll be saying it a few years from now or because I have been lucky enough to stay home with him and experience (nearly) every waking moment of his toddlerhood. There is no one word that sums up … Continue reading

Making Birthdays Special – Or Not

Marriage, like most of life, is all about seeing things from someone else’s point of view. I’ve had to learn that Jonathan copes with things, especially arguments and emotions, much more slowly than I do. That’s not what I wanted to discuss today. What I wanted to discuss is how marriage can sometimes force you to see the world in an entirely new way. Sounds like I’m talking about something life changing, right? Not really, though it’s certainly hard for me to process. I’m talking about presents. Jon’s birthday is today, and for months I had no idea what to … Continue reading

My Son’s Birthday Party Part II

While the first tradition I have for my son’s birthday parties involve chocolate cake, the second tradition involves making my son some kind of crazy crown hat to wear for the party! Made out of colored construction paper, this party hat is the envy of all. It is not a traditional crown but more a circular head piece with lots of colorful paper sticking out all over. Every year it is a little bit different than the year before. After making said birthday party hat, I turned my attention to the chocolate cupcakes. I used my favorite chocolate cake recipe … Continue reading

Birthday Cake Part III

Low and behold I did not have enough ice cream. I quickly cleaned out the ice cream freezer barrel (after my son scooped out as much leftover ice cream as possible) so that I could get it back into the freezer. Six hours later I took it out and started freezing the rest of the ice cream base. After forty five minutes the ice cream was not freezing to my utter dismay. I racked my brain for a possible solution. Clearly the barrel was not thoroughly frozen. My first thought was that I would have to wake up at four … Continue reading

Birthday Cake Part I

My son is obsessed with birthdays. He loves to see the birthday candles lit, he loves to sing, “happy birthday,” and he loves to blow out the candles. In theory he also loves to eat the cake but more often than not he will eat the frosting and leave most of the cake. Knowing all these birthday related thing about my son, I wanted to do something a little different for his birthday cake. In preparation for my son’s third birthday, I decided to make him an ice cream cake instead of the more standard birthday cake. While my son … Continue reading

Daddy’s Birthday Part V

Now that we had everything prepared for daddy’s birthday, we invited daddy back upstairs (did I mention that the cake and soup was a surprise) to take a break from working on his dissertation. He smelled the French Onion Soup simmering and was immediately excited for his birthday dinner. I was not exactly sure what the soup was supposed to look like and taste like, but my husband told me that French Onion soup tastes and looks like the soup I had made (I personally think it is kind of weird because it is basically just stringy onions in broth). … Continue reading

Daddy’s Birthday Part III

On Daddy’s birthday I awoke early hoping to slip out of the house to buy some french bread from a local bakery. Alas, my son heard me getting ready to leave and insisted on accompanying me to the bakery. We got into the car and drove the three miles to the bakery. I got a loaf of bread and my son, thanks to his good looks, got a free chocolate chip cookie. We headed home to make daddy a special birthday breakfast of pancakes, sausage, and french pressed coffee. As I got the pancake batter prepared, daddy and daughter woke … Continue reading
