Language Development in Toddlers

Two-year olds are generally talkers, though most of the time we do not even know what they’re saying. However, their words mean something to them. The toddler’s mind is ahead of their mouth literally. Their new motor skills are not coordinated with each other. In the mind of the toddler, all the words are right, but when they try to convert the thought to speech, gibberish comes out. Don’t worry if sometimes they sound like they are saying complete sentences in a foreign language. Most toddlers will gradually get better at forming their words in due time. To assess a … Continue reading

Effects of Pushing Your Child Too Hard

In my last article I discussed how some parents push their children to advance and be the best. I also discusses that some parents do this with their children’s best interest in mind while others push for the competition of their children being better than others. While some encouragement and pushing by parents is normal and at times very necessary, over doing it can be harmful to your child. Readiness is a critical factor in early childhood learning. In most cases pushing your child before he or she is developmentally read is useless. Some parents find themselves placing adult standards … Continue reading

Senior Missionary Series: Putting in Your Papers

It used to be that mission papers were filled out by hand, but not so any more. With the progression of technology, you now apply for your mission online. Your bishop will give you the website address, and he will go in and authorize you to be a user on that site. This way, no one can just hop on the site and play around. Only persons seriously sending in their papers can have access. Once on the site, you’ll be asked to fill in all your personal information, and then you’ll be asked a series of questions about your … Continue reading

Curriculum Reviews: Power Glide Foreign Language Programs

I have written before about teaching foreign languages in the homeschool. I think it is one of the more difficult areas to teach as a homeschooler because it is one of the few areas where a background knowledge is somewhat essential if you’re going to think of starting in the younger grades. What has always bugged me about any pre-packaged foreign language curriculum is that they often lead a parent to believe that they will be purchasing a program that will yield fluent speakers without the parent having to know the language. While I wouldn’t say that you must speak … Continue reading

Would Learning Another Language Help Your Business?

I do some work on an international level. When I decided to take on this challenge, I anticipated that there would be a bit of a learning curve and I would have to adjust to cultural differences, time zones and other details. I even rightfully imagined I would have to learn something about currency exchange rates (and I have)–but I didn’t really think on whether or not I would need anything other than my decent command of the English language in order to communicate with all the people I would need to communicate with. The truth is, I’ve found that … Continue reading

Unique Summer Learning

Learning and academic achievement do not have to stop during the summer months. However, your child does not have to study and attend class to have a successful and enriching summer. Children, like adults, need a break. While encouraging your child to continue learning and enhancing his knowledge, you should also let him enjoy his time off and have some fun. There are many ways to strengthen your child’s academics without making him endure class or study time. Summer is a wonderful opportunity for your child to grow academically in a less structure environment setting. Look to enroll your child … Continue reading

Teaching Your Baby a Foreign Language

This is a hot trend and experts agree that if you want your baby to be bi-lingual, he/she must be exposed to a foreign language. Learning a foreign language is not only highly practical (depending on which one you learn), but is also supposed to help develop brains and enhance cognitive development. As someone who speaks two other languages (besides English) fluently, I have to agree. If you want your child to be fluent, the time to start is while they are still in the cradle. Foreign language is incredibly easy to learn the earlier you start. It helps with … Continue reading

Sending Your Kids To College For The Summer

As you set out making your plans for summer programs for your kids, don’t overlook your local college. Many colleges offer classes and camps for kids. You can usually find out about these offerings through the department that handles continuing education or special courses. It’s a great way for your kids to get a taste of what college life is all about. Here in Mobile, The University of South Alabama offers camps for kids as young as 5. They offer a little bit of everything: art, foreign language, even a CSI Forensic Science Camp. Some campuses also offer enrichment classes … Continue reading

10 Good Reasons for Foreign Languages

I’ll come right out at the very beginning and admit my bias: I am a polyglot. I speak 2 other languages fluently besides English. I am in the very slow process of learning Mandarin Chinese from my babysitter. (Who, by the way, as a homeschooler taught herself how to speak Chinese while she was in high school.) To be honest, if I could, I would likely go back to school and study more foreign language. So it is a given that with all this foreign language swirling around our house, teaching a foreign language would be a given in our … Continue reading
