I Dream of Bookcases

I’ve always had a special relationship with books, for at least as long as I can remember. My very first books, The Poky Little Puppy and a set of children’s encyclopedias were treasured as no other toys were. Through the years, I also dreamed of having my own built-in bookcases. Through the years, I have had many substitutes for these imagined bookcases. First there was the headboard on my twin bed at home which held library books and a row of paperbacks I got for free through the library’s Reading is Fundamental program. Later, in college, there were a series … Continue reading

What is GoodReads?

Those of you who are familiar with Shelfari will immediately catch the premise of GoodReads, which has essentially the same concept – recommend books to your friends and get recommendations back. But it’s not just about reading, it’s a whole social network. You start your GoodReads experience by creating an account. You can upload a picture or an avatar (or leave that field blank, but how boring is that?) add personal information or not, and create your profile to suit you. Then you start adding books to your list. You can search for authors’ names or titles, or you can … Continue reading

What is Listmania?

As you shop on Amazon.com, you may notice a book cover on the sidebar, with the heading, “Listmania.” As you click, you’ll discover that someone included that book on a list of their favorites, and they posted that list to share with other Amazon customers. This can be a great way to find other books in the same genre or by the same author that you would enjoy. Start by putting one of your favorite books into the search engine. The Listmania list that pops up in the sidebar will either have that item included on the list, or will … Continue reading

Getting Bestsellers for Free

I love browsing through the bookstore. There is just so much there. Before my frugal living days, it wouldn’t be odd for me to walk into a bookstore and emerge an hour later will a pile of books and $300 less in my account. Did I mention that I love books? Of course now I employ other strategies to feed my book habit, such as trading with friends, going to book sales, hitting the library and using paperbackswap.com. But one thing I miss about those spending sprees is discovering new books and pouring through the glossy bestsellers. The bookstore always … Continue reading

Livingroom Cam

Come inside the home of a family that lets you peek in, turn the lights on and off and visit for the holidays. I first came across the Livingroom Cam back in 2000. I usually stay away from cams on the web simply because of the tendency for many of them to be pornographic, and well, I’m usually too busy with my own life to peer into the lives of others. Back in the 90s and very early 2000s, web cameras really took off. Remember the infamous JenniCam and AnnaCam, where young women allowed voyeurs into their lives? It seemed … Continue reading

Organizing Your Personal Library: De-cluttering Books (1)

Want some easy and mostly painless ways de-clutter your books? Here are some tips that will make the job easy. De-cluttering books can be tough. I love my books, so letting any of them go can really hurt. But the reality is that if there are books scattered throughout the home, on surfaces and floors where they can get damaged, or overstuffed into shelves where they are so bent that they look like they are doing the wave, well that isn’t really love, is it?
