Kids Virtual Field Trips

Whether you home school, summer school, preschool or just like to have educational fun with your kids, you should be very interested in this blog post. Virtual field trips for kids (and in some cases by kids) are a great way to introduce children to places that are not feasible to physically visit. You can also encourage kids to chronicle their own real-life field trips and share them with others, whether through their own website, a YouTube video or through a website such as MeetMeAtTheCorner.org. Let’s start with MeetMeAtTheCorner.org. It is focused on the New York City area, but it … Continue reading

Wild Chronicles – National Geographic Podcast

Animal lovers will definitely enjoy the free video podcast Wild Chronicles from National Geographic. The episodes are only six or seven minutes long. Like you would expect from any program by National Geographic, the photographs and videos are superb. So far they’ve produced a hundred and one shows covering a wide variety of animals. Every episode features an animal or a unique place. Two shows are even on Madagascar. It’s fun to show the children what the real Madagascar looks like. The podcasts are educational, but also fun to watch. Viewers can learn about crocodiles, sea lions, bison, gorillas, mongoose, … Continue reading

The First Thanksgiving Website

This gorgeous website from Scholastic teaches kids and adults all about the first Thanksgiving, with a realistic perspective and plenty of activities for children and adults. “They spent two months at sea to reach a strange new world, and barely survived once they got there. “Learn how the Pilgrims reached America and lived to celebrate the first Thanksgiving.” I have to say that Scholastic really came through with this website all about the first Thanksgiving. The website packages the first Thanksgiving much like a reality television show, complete with photos and three live chats where students can ask questions and … Continue reading

National Geographic Kids Website

I really love really good education website for kids. Not only do they offer a learning environment, but they do it in such a way that is so much fun. My kids don’t even realize they are learning. In fact, they beg for time on the computer to “play” on these websites. Of course, I always play with them, and I am happy to say that with the National Geographic Kids website, I find myself learning a lot, too. Did you know, for example, that scientists have recently discovered yet another planet? Or that there is a type of goat … Continue reading

Starting Them Young

My 6-year-old daughter is getting to be quite a solid shooter with her Fisher-Price digital camera. In fact, a few of her images are so impressive that I am considering entering them in a national photo contest. Believe it or not, there are dozens of photo contests for kids that offer spectacular prizes. I stumbled upon one of them, and when I started researching it I found that there are dozens of ways kids can earn awesome gifts if their shot is considered the best of the best. What’s more, the contests are sponsored by reputable companies, so you don’t … Continue reading
