Atari 2600 Games Online

If you grew up in the late 70s and early 80s then you must be familiar with the classic Atari 2600 games. I remember running home from school and rushing through my homework so that I might pop in a favorite cartridge and battle against blocky-looking space invaders, asteroids or dragons. The Atari 2600 was like a magic box. Here was an entire arcade in my living room. and it was made even more special by the fact that I won it in a contest sponsored by Captain Crunch cereal. So even now, with all of our current technology, it … Continue reading

Hot EA Games Now on the Mac

EA games are now available for the Mac. Apple announced the release of six new titles of video games that are playable on the Mac, along with gaming gear to enhance the playing experience. Apple is recommending that these games be played on the newer Intel-based Macs. Some of the games list the Intel processor as a requirement, although rumor has it that the games are all playable on older Macs, but with either a decrease in performance or with glitches that may pause the games or require them to be restarted. Some of the games are available right now, … Continue reading

PlayFirst Downloadable Computer Games

If you haven’t checked out the offerings from PlayFirst, you definitely should. They are a homegrown software company with a reputation for building fun downloadable arcade -type computer games. The games that they offer are all very family friendly with rules that are simple to learn. My six-year-old son enjoys playing them, and they are teaching him not only a wicked sense of eye-hand coordination but also how to place priorities on different tasks. Most of these games are based on the premise of juggling multiple tasks. Ever see those old time performers who spun various plates on the ends … Continue reading

Boomshine Game Review

Want a cute little addicting game that is very relaxing to play? Try this free little gem that can be played online. I first came across Boomshine from the Bored.com website. (If you aren’t familiar with Bored.com, you can click here to learn all about it: Bored.com.) It looked interesting, so I decided to try it out. The object of the game is to blow up or “boom” pretty little colored dots. Don’t worry, there is no violence in this game, just a very pretty and soothing piano music track that blends so nicely with the visuals and strategy of … Continue reading

Design with Legos

This has got to be one of the best free software programs out there! Read on to learn all about it, including where you can get your own copy. My oldest son is crazy about Legos. He can spend hours designing and building creations. Little block people with yellow heads get to drive sleek vehicles such as a laser-powered space ship, or fortify themselves behind elaborate high tech fortresses. Sometimes his visions are so complicated that he attempts to put them down on paper first. That is why I know that this free software program will have him jumping up … Continue reading

Video Game System Failure

If you have been trying to decided which video game system to purchase, here is a new feature to consider: how likely that video game system is going to break. Personally, it is information that I would like to know. A few years ago, my son received a V-Smile kids educational video game system as a gift. Later, we purchased several cartridges to go with it, as well as an extra controller. The games were fun for him, and they helped teach him letters, numbers, addition, subtraction and reading. We looked forward to passing the game down to his sister … Continue reading

Celebrities Get “Their Halo 3 On”

Halo 3 debuted today for the Xbox 360 after weeks and weeks of promotional hype. This third installment of the popular video game series was created by Microsoft. And although the company won’t say how many millions of dollars went into its development and promotion (probably more like tens of millions), Microsoft says it is confident that it will outdoor the summer blockbuster movie Spiderman 3. Why the movie comparison? I’m not sure. Shouldn’t apples be compared to apples and video games to video games? Perhaps the comparison is one more way to grab people’s attention in an avalanche of … Continue reading

Fun at the Arcade

Most of the time I want family outings to have some educational moments. Today though we took our change jar and went to play at the Manitou Springs Penny Arcade. They have rooms and rooms of games. Some are very old and some are very up to date and modern. Some of the old games only cost a nickel or a dime. There’s an “English Football” game that is not electronic at all but has entirely mechanical works. And it costs a penny to play! One of my sons had great fun scoring goal after goal on me. We had … Continue reading

Make A Frugal Greenhouse

With all of our trips to local parks and gardens, I have really been itching to have a garden and grow our own vegetables. My grand plans will have to wait until next year, when we can install some protective fencing. Otherwise, my garden will wind up feeding the deer and the bunnies. But, I’m going to get started anyway, growing some things indoors. I checked into buying a greenhouse to help start my seeds and nurture the young “plantlings” indoors. But, the whole greenhouse set up can get very expensive. So I found a way to be a bit … Continue reading
