PS3 Update 2.30

The new PlayStation 3 (PS3) update has long been anticipated, and it is finally here! The next time you go online with your PS3, you will be promoted to download the update. Sony recommends a 130 MB of free space on your PS3 hard disk drive for this system update. Or, you can do a PC update, which requires 130 MB free space on a removable storage media.

So what exactly is and is not part of this update?

The biggest piece of update excitement has to do with the new PS3 store. The new page layout, and new interface (more system based and less Internet based) makes for some snappy and easier navigation. Instead of being keyboard based, the new system really takes advantage of the controllers, allowing you to flip past pages faster and faster with the X and circle buttons. Extra features also include your network account avatar on the store pages and a clearer understanding of the status of your items through content status icons.

The PS3 2.30 update also includes DTS-HD Master Audio playback and DTS-HD High resolution audio output for the Blu-ray disc. Some software titles may not work unless you first download the new upgrade. One thing to note about the audio upgrade, the PS3 still does not support DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 for DVD-Video or DTS-ES Matrix for Blu-ray Discs.

The upgrade won't cause any changes to your network account or your virtual wallet system.

PS3 fans have been wondering if PlayStation Home would be part of this upgrade. Unfortunately, it is not. PlayStation Home is a virtual world along the lines of Second Life, in which you can hang out, chat, rent an apartment and even play a virtual game of pool or go bowling. It will even contain a virtual cinema for watching movie downloads. I'll be sure to bring you an update on this addition when more information becomes available.
