Rehashing Offenses

We’ve all been hurt. There’s no doubt about that. Someone said something thoughtless, and while we tried to react in a Christlike way, the sting is definitely there, and we can’t forget what happened. Our first reaction may be to tell our husbands or wives what happened. They’re sympathetic, and they bolster us up and make us feel better. But that good feeling only lasts a little while, and then we feel hurt again. So then we tell a good friend, and she expresses the appropriate amount of shock, and we feel good again. Over and over the cycle repeats, … Continue reading

New Computer? Or More Memory?

I am technologically challenged–not necessarily in terms of how to create and save a file or how to use certain software programs, but definitely when it comes to understanding exactly how computers work. I don’t know my hard drive from my megabytes from a memory card. I’m not even entirely sure what the difference between a disk, cd, dvd, and zip drive is (thank goodness for teenagers)–but I am learning that when I think that I’m running out of capability, I might only need an upgrade–not an entirely new system for my home business. I have a tendency to just … Continue reading

Are You “Optimizing” Your Business Computer?

I want to be the first person to admit that I do not know all the programs, bells and whistles that are available on my computer. The one I use for my home business is relatively new—I purchased it brand new less than a year ago and took it right out of the box, hooked up all the peripheral equipment and went right to work. And, while I feel pretty efficient, I am willing to bet that I have not even begun to optimize my business computer and use it for all the things it is capable of… Taking a … Continue reading

Saving energy with your computer – Energy Star recommendations

Energy Star recommendations You may have seen the logo for Energy Star when you turn your computer or if you have purchased a refrigerator or washer and dryer in recent years. Should I turn my computer off overnight?

Earlier today we talked about how turning on and off your computer daily will not ruin your hard disk drive. For those more concerned about saving energy than about hard drive failure, I’ll address the question of turning off your computer each night versus leaving it on all of the time. Should I turn my computer off each night or can I leave it on? The simple answer is that it’s really up to you. Businesses often leave their computers running all of the time and never turn them off unless something goes wrong. This line of thought is usually … Continue reading

Will turning off my computer ruin my hard drive?

Over the years, I have been asked the question on numerous occasions, “Which is better: leaving my computer on all of the time or turning it off after each use?” My response has often been lengthier than my inquisitors probably wanted, but I just wanted them to be informed. A few weeks ago, we discussed the various power down options for Windows based computers (namely Windows XP, 2000, and ME). Since then, I have received a few more questions similar to that mentioned above: “Do I really need to turn my computer off overnight or can I just leave it … Continue reading

Do You Need a Database?

As recent as ten years ago, businesses (especially small ones) got by just fine with a rolodex or an index card filing system for contacts and names. But, with the advent of the personal computer, it is much more common and efficient to put everything into a database of some sort. Have you been wondering if your business is large enough, or if you will be more efficient if you set up a database for your work? There are dozens of computer database software programs available. If you have purchases a computer with any sort of office software already bundled … Continue reading

Hotel Room Woes

A couple of weeks ago we traveled out of town to attend a children’s festival. We did not make hotel reservations as we were planning to return the same day. Big mistake. The event turned out to be grander than we had anticipated and we ended up staying a lot longer than we had planned. Instead of starting the 2.5-hour drive back home we decided to spend the night at a local hotel. (I always leave an overnight bag in the car so we were covered in that respect.) Since we didn’t have hotel reservations we stopped at a local … Continue reading
