Protecting Yourself From Internet Fraud

The local CBS station I my area recently aired a story about a prominent university professor. The professor had saved well over $200,000 and put it in an E-trade account. After he and his wife returned from vacation, they found the e-trade account was at a little over $50,000 rather than the $200,000 they had left in it. With a $150,000 loss they started asking questions, and found out that while they were away hackers had managed to get into their account, get their passwords, and transfer money from their e-trade account into what e-trade thought was their personal bank … Continue reading

Protect Yourself From Holiday Crime

The holiday season is a time of hustle, bustle, stress, and happiness. It’s a perfect time for criminals to prey on the unsuspecting. Don’t let your guard down. Your Car Keep your doors locked and valuables out of sight. That may seem like common sense, but all too often crimes of opportunity are committed against unlocked doors. Keep temptation to a minimum by keeping your possessions hidden. When you stop to pump gas, keep your purse or wallet on the floor in the back seat; criminals have been known to open the passenger door and help themselves while you’re otherwise … Continue reading

Computer Accessory Deals

Notebook Case FAR I love my laptop. Okay, so it’s not actually mine, it’s my son’s. But as the parent, I get first dibs when I need it. He saved for it and we kicked in the other two-thirds as a Christmas present. It’s been a blessing at times. They’re so convenient. The only thing I worry about with it is dropping it. No, we didn’t buy the $200 extended warranty even though the salesman was pretty convincing. Instead, we have it packed into a very nicely padded case. It cost a lot more than the Free After Rebate deal … Continue reading

And They Thought They Were So Smart!

I had to chuckle to myself when I just read the news item about someone online trying to sell the personal information of one Herman Munster. That is right – you read it correctly – they tried to sell information for Herman Munster, the beloved Frankenstein head of the Munster family. Apparently the wannabe crooks (I call them wannabes because obviously they are not very smart) decided to try to sell credit card numbers and personal information online. Th only problem (other than that that is illegal) is that they tried to sell the information of a television character. Apparently, … Continue reading

Pre-Order Wii Play for only $14.48

Elisha got a Wii for Christmas. Yes, I was one of the idiots that stood outside in line for ten hours in 22-degree weather. Let me tell you, it was completely worth it. The boys started their video game obsession with Grandpa’s Sega Genesis years ago. (My first set was Pong, but I’m dating myself again.) That obsession has only grown. The Gamecube came next. I really like the Gamecube, in part because it has a large selection of rated E games. Then came the Gameboys, Gameboy Advances, Gameboy Advance SP (yes, they got us three times). For Christmas, it … Continue reading

How To Set Up A Firewall

In recent blogs I have talked a lot about computer security and what you need to do to keep you and your family safe from spyware and computer viruses. One important step in computer security is setting up a firewall. I think one of the main reasons people don’t have a firewall set up on their computer is because they don’t know how. If you are running Windows XP, here are instructions on how to set up a firewall on your computer: 1. Go to Start (Bottom right hand corner of the screen) 2. Go to Settings 3. Go to … Continue reading

A Laptop for a Ten Year Old?

I teach after school at a local elementary school in my area. This week was the children’s first week back after Christmas break, and yesterday afternoon by class started to tell me about all of the Christmas presents they received. Once child had gotten a special Barbie they wanted, another a keyboard although she assured me her real instrument is the drums. Going around the circle everyone had received typical elementary school gifts. When we got to the last child in the room however, he matter of factly told everyone he received a laptop for Christmas. A laptop? Really? I … Continue reading
