The Beatles Prepare to Blast into Outer Space

Now even life forms in the far reaches of the galaxy will get to enjoy music from John, Paul, George and Ringo. On Monday the Beatles go universal and will make history thanks to NASA and a couple of noteworthy anniversaries. The space agency plans to broadcast the Beatles’ song “Across the Universe” across the galaxy to Polaris, the North Star. According to NASA officials, it will be the first-ever beaming of a radio song directly into deep space. So what’s the occasion for the historic moment? It’s not to lighten the spirits of space aliens as Paul McCartney recently … Continue reading

The Beatles Are Coming! The Beatles Are Coming!

Although I am too young to have enjoyed the American invasion of the mop tops, I may be able to relive a small part of it today, Valentine’s Day. Apple Inc. (the Mac company) has acquired the first direct download rights to the entire catalogue of the Beatles music. Rumor has it that these songs will be made available today, February 14th, in the iTunes music store. The digital versions of the Beatles songs will be available in iTunes exclusively for the first three months. I can’t yet confirm this as fact. One of the things that Apple is pretty … Continue reading

Spring Break Snapshots

I can’t get Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” out of my head. Only, when I think of my upcoming spring break photo shoot in Chicago, I contemplate changing “glass” to “camera” and using it as my theme song. I’m just a few weeks away from job shadowing a portrait photographer in one of the most photographed metropolises in world. I can’t wait. I love Chicago and getting the chance to shoot outdoors in the Windy City with one of my favorite pro photographers is an opportunity of a lifetime. Of course, Chicago is not the only place in the world that … Continue reading

Music in the Home

Excitement hit our house the other day. A CD I had ordered and been waiting on for over a month arrived – finally. I couldn’t wait to play it. I bought the CD initially on the strength of one song – In My Daughter’s Eyes by Martina McBride. The time I watched this on you tube it reduced me to tears. Some songs are like that. Thankfully I like the rest of the CD as well. Anyone coming to our house would see at a glance both Mick and I love music. For starters we have some of those really … Continue reading

Cha-Ching! for Charity

More than 350,000 screaming fans braved torrential rain, thunder and lightning tonight to see Paul McCartney perform a charity concert in a place he had never belted out a single note before. The former Beatle belted out his favorite tunes in the middle of Kiev’s central Independence Square. The outdoor show, the first in Ukraine for McCartney, was billed as the biggest concert ever in the former Soviet republic. Government officials allowed the charity event to be broadcast live on national television and on giant TV screens in five cities. The music icon, who turns 66 next week, reportedly got … Continue reading

The Way it Works

I’m just bubbling over here and I couldn’t wait to tell you all about it. What a great morning! I have not long come back from singing with our Sing Australia choir at a nearby nursing home. What an experience! The crowd was much smaller than those we normally have at some of the other nursing homes we regularly sing at. But what they lacked in numbers they made up for in response. We started by singing songs from the war years. These songs many of the residents knew. Our choir leader encouraged them to sing along with us. They … Continue reading

PETA’s Worst Dressed List

If nothing else, PETA is definitely outspoken about fur wearing celebrities of which they disapprove. They released their worst dressed list recently and it is topped by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. PETA released their list, saying the following about Aretha: “How ’bout some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for animals? Aretha, when you waddled into the Grammys in yet another vulgar fur, you looked as if you were going to perform ‘I Am the Walrus’ by the Beatles. You might be a queen, but you don’t know jack about compassion.” Oh, did they use the term “waddled?” That is hitting a bit … Continue reading

Oh No, We Won Best New Artist – Part 2

In my last blog, I talked about artists who won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist then didn’t quite live up to the hype. But, the VMA has only been around since 1984. If you really want to talk about the kiss of death award for an artist or band, let’s talk about the Best New Artist Grammy Award. As far as the Grammys go, the Best New Artist (BNA) award has been around since 1960. And there have been some acts that have truly lived up to the title. A little group named the Beatles won … Continue reading

Osmond Reunion

Hail, Hail, the gang’s all here—just a bit (okay, a lot) older. Donny, Marie, Jimmy and the rest of the Osmond clan returned to the stage this week to tape a 50th anniversary reunion show to be aired on PBS next year. The seven singing Osmonds are still a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n roll, even though they haven’t been onstage together in more than 20 years. Which is not to say that combinations of the clan haven’t been performing over the last few decades. Various Osmonds perform more than 200 shows a year, according to Wayne … Continue reading
