Top Ten Video Games

If you had to choose the ten greatest video games of all time, which ones would you choose? Would they be childhood favorites, or more modern cutting edge games? or perhaps it would be a mixture of both. Andy McNamara, the editor-in-Chief of the magazine, Game Information, was asked by a local Pittsburgh, Pa television station what his top picks would be. Game Information is tha largest video game magazine in the entire country.

McNamara's picks span through the years and through the platforms. From the Arcade system to the PC, his seems to have covered all of the basis. But one thing he doesn't have is a game played on the Atari 2600, the pioneer of home video games and video game systems, which is surprising. I myself might have voted for Adventure, which was the first video game to ever have an Easter Egg hidden in it. There was also no mention of Myst, a game series that "did something different" and spawned several copycats.

A few of the top picks have far too much violence in them for me to advocate them as the greatest video games of all times, but I can respect some of the pioneering aspects of the game that led them to be picked for this list. I would have preferred top games that incorporate the best of the media without the negativity and "cheapness" of violence. For example, one of the games made it into the list because it was cutting edge at the time of release, for incorporating horror in a perspective "That brought the action and the fear to a never-before experienced level."

But hey, I'm not the video game expert, right?

Here are McNamara's picks.

1. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA - NES

2. SUPER MARIO BROS. - NES

3. TETRIS - Gameboy

4. GRAND THEFT AUTO III - PlayStation 2

5. DOOM - PC

6. RESIDENT EVIL 4 - Gamecube

7. FINAL FANTASY III - Super NES

8. HALO - Xbox

9. MS. PAC MAN - Arcade

10. WORLD OF WARCRAFT - PC
