When Do You Buy A New Computer?

With the release of Windows Vista a lot of people are faced with the problem of whether to upgrade their existing computer to support the OS, stick with their old copy of Windows, or simply purchase a new computer. That got me to thinking…How often do you purchase a new computer? I purchased a G4 PowerMac early in 2001. I used that computer exclusively until December of last year when I purchased a MacBook Pro laptop. I absolutely love my laptop, it was one of those purchases I contemplated for years before actually making however. For me I think I’m … Continue reading

Upgrade Your Computer Mouse

I recently inherited a friends PC. When he brought the computer over to my house he brought along with it the original mouse that came with the computer still in it’s original packaging. Apparently he has a general rule that he doesn’t use the included mouse with any computer he buys. After looking at the mouse that cam with his HP desktop, I can see why. The included mouse with his computer was lightweight and was fairly basic. After using different mice with my computers for so long I have to say I’ve gotten rather spoiled. I used the included … Continue reading

Are You a Budding Photojournalist?

With the explosion of social media, camera phones and digital photography, photojournalism has become more popular than ever. In fact, these days you don’t need a college degree or professional photo experience to snap or record major events. Look at CNN’s I-reports. The cable news network now accepts video, photos and audio captured on a computer or cell phone from citizen journalists. The best clips are used on the network’s programming and are viewed by millions more on CNN’s website. The problem with having all these “citizen journalists” running around taking shots of current events and looking to have their … Continue reading

Learning More About Shooting Constellations

As I continue my series on astrophotography I thought it might be helpful to discuss some of the places that are available for you to receive hands on lessons in the subject. I got my first taste of astrophotography at Chicago’s Alder Planetarium. Located along the banks of Lake Michigan, the center is a premier public resource for learning about astronomy. It is also staffed by some of the nation’s best astrophotographers. If you live in the area or are planning a trip to Chicago sometime in the near future I would highly recommend attending Alder’s Planetarium’s “Far Out Fridays.” … Continue reading

Playing With Digital Prints

Digital photography has stepped miles and miles away from where it was, only a mere four or five years ago. It is light years ahead of where many ever saw it going. And while I am convinced that film is never going to go out, I recognize the changes that warrant digital to never leave either. So with all of the upgrades and advances in our digital technology, what things can you do with digital that was more difficult with film? First, film prints had to be scanned into the computer and then sent wherever you wanted them. Digital photos … Continue reading

Tips for Teaching Ergonomics

In my last article, I discussed the fear that children who work long hours on a computer may develop trouble with calcification of their bones. I also talked about how a few schools are now addressing ergonomics in attempt to teach children the correct posture when operating a computer. However, many schools have not bought into the ergonomics program. If your child is not learning correct posture and computer health at his or her school, you can begin teaching it at home. Follow some the tips below. These are not only for children. I know I can benefit from some … Continue reading

Road Testing Vista

I fight with myself every time a new Windows operating system is released. On one hand, let’s be practical. Newly released software is frequently buggy. Why mess with it until it’s been tweaked and tuned and becomes less likely to make you want to bang your head into your keyboard like that ex-significant other? On the other hand, if it’s new, state of the art, and shiny, I’ve just got to try it, consequences be darned. So I have officially upgraded to Vista, despite the naysayers and doomsday prophecies, and, so far, so good. The box claims you can run … Continue reading

Laptop vs. Desktop

Do you have a laptop or a desktop computer? I recently purchased a laptop computer which I absolutely love. Before I bought my previous computer I was forced with the decision “Laptop or Desktop?” I love the portability of laptops, but at the time I decided the slightly less expensive desktop computer was a better choice. Desktops are easier to upgrade, have larger hard drives and are a little more difficult to steal. At the time I made my purchase I lived in a college dorm and was concerned about the possibility of my roommate leaving our door unlocked one … Continue reading

How Long Do You Spend On The Internet?

How much time do you spend on the Internet? Last night I sat down on the sofa to watch TV with my significant other. He was going to go get something out of his car, so I picked up my laptop and turned it on thinking I would have time to check my email before he got back.. As soon as I started to sign on I was attacked with a “Why do you always do that?” A discussion ensued where I told him I intended on only checking my email, and he responded with the statement that it was … Continue reading
