Back to Basics #1

Perhaps I’m getting back to basics. My attempts at reading and writing this summer are still going strong. I’ve really made great strides thanks to a discovery about what to do when reading a difficult book. The stack of books on the “to read” side is lightening while the books on the “already read” side are growing stronger each day. Along with all of this reading I’ve also tried to do some writing but that has been a difficulty recently. Back to Basics is my therapeutic cure for all of the things I’ve been trying (and failing) to accomplish this … Continue reading

Do You still have a Landline at Home?

If you still have a “real” phone or a landline, you’re still like the majority of homeowners, but that may change before long. Many people are doing away with landlines to go wireless. Between cell phones and VOIP (voice over Internet phone) service, fewer consumers are utilizing traditional phone companies. In many cases, they are able to save a decent amount of money, since there are great packages some Internet and wireless phone companies offer. The plans tend be quite competitive with typical phone bills. In some areas, it’s simpler to keep regular phone service, especially if your Internet Service … Continue reading

5 Ways to Save on Your Phone Bill

Phone charges can be a very costly monthly expense. It is not unusual to pay $40 or $50 a month before you even make a long distance call. And if you get caught up in the whole local carrier versus long distance carrier issues, it can get really nuts. We found out about this the hard way, a year ago. Our phone company automatically switched us over to a new long distance carrier when the old one went under. Our first bill revealed charges that were three times as much as we would normally pay. And it was a complete … Continue reading

SunRocket Going Belly Up

It’s a sad day for those of us who have been enjoying SunRocket’s $200 per year for unlimited calls deal. As of August 5, they’re ceasing to exist. Depending upon who you ask (or read), it’s due to abuse of the system, lawsuits, or simple market economics. We were pretty satisfied with their service and their customer relations. Here come all the solicitations for new service. For now, we ported our number over to Vonage with no problem whatsoever. They’re giving us two months free, so we’ll see how it goes and maybe stay with them. Of course, I’ve heard … Continue reading

Tell Me a Story! Libraries and Free Phone Stories

Karen recently wrote a great series of blogs in Homeschooling about reading aloud. Some mothers are able to read hours and hours to their children without tiring. So far, I’m not one of them. I’m trying to put Karen’s suggestions into practice and read more with my older children. It has gotten better through the years. After seven or eight readings of “Button Goes to the Park” to a four year old, my voice would be about gone. That’s how I discovered stories from the library. A lot of libraries offer them. The kids are so excited to get to … Continue reading

One Ringy Dingy… Unlimited Phone Calls for $199/yr.

We made the switch to VOIP almost two years ago and haven’t looked back. At that time, we got our local phone bill for almost $40 with nothing except local calls on it. Taxes were the big killer, but the phone company was charging a pretty penny for their plan as well. We were pretty nervous about switching over to VOIP because it sounded too good to be true. This is one case where it is true! Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) uses your existing Internet connection to send a compressed digital packet from one port to another. Lost? Simply … Continue reading
