Will the New iPhone 2.0 Prompt a Trade-in Policy?

by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger

iphones Users all over the world are anxiously awaiting for Apple to announce a new iPhone 2.0 or iPhone 3G later today. Of course, Apple has never officially announced such a phone, but rumors from reliable sources insist that the new iPhone is indeed coming.

For one thing, Apple stores all over the country are out of stock on the current iPhone, and mysterious boxes have begun to appear in stores.

Among the features expected for the new iPhone 2.0 are 3G network connectivity, GPS, larger storage and "fixes" to those things that iPhone users have been complaining about over and over again: dropped calls, poor sound quality and phones that mysteriously shut off. The 3G connectivity is exciting in that it would allow users to connect to the Internet at home broadband speeds.

The price is expected to run $299 or even $199, and the new iPhone 2.0 should also be available in red (in addition to black).

This raises an interesting question for those users who currently own iPhones and spent big bucks on them. Will they then feel pressure to upgrade to the new iPhone? There are all of those roll over minutes to consider. What will happen to the old iPhone? Chances are that Ebay will become flooded with previously owned iPhones. Current owners are lucky if they get $50 for an old phone.

The frustration for some iPhone users has got to be high, especially when you consider other products out there that are comparable, such as the Blackberry. And while the new iPhone 2.0 is exciting, it doesn't appear that it will have anything mind blowing enough to compare with the release of the original, which has been termed by many as "The God Phone." Still, one thing that Apple knows is that when customers are happy with their products, they are very likely to purchase again and again.

If Apple wants to keep those iPhone users happy, perhaps they will offer an iPhone trade in program to sooth any users who may be frustrated. What do you think?
