Your Blog: "About Me"

Many blogs offer an "About Me" section that gives readers the opportunity to get to know the blogger a little bit better. The majority of bloggers tend to skip this section, either leaving it absent or filling it with cursory information. But here is why you should provide a good "About Me" section, and some tips about what to put in it.

Unless all of your visitors to your blog know you intimately, visitors to your blog may be a little cautious about what you are saying. They are essentially meeting a stranger on the street and would like to be able to make an initial impression. Are you trustworthy? Do you think like they do? Do you offer a different perspective on life? Are you dealing with something that they are interested in knowing more about? Can they trust you?

While I am not suggesting that you spill out all of your information on the web for anyone to grab, you want to give your readers at least a basic sense of who you are. It is a matter of trust. Anonymous writing don't always seem as credible as something that is signed.

First, take a look at what your blog is about. Are you sharing your experiences in parenting? Perhaps you should tell readers how many children you have and their ages. Are you an expert gardener? What is your experience in that area and in which region of the country are you located? And if you don't have any experience at all but great enthusiasm for your topic, well let everyone know that. If you are honest about yourself, you will gain that trust.

You don't have to pinpoint the town you live in, unless that it important to your blog, but why not let readers know the region or state where you live? Is it rural or a big city? You can use the first names only of your family, or give each of them a nickname that readers can get to know. And photos are always good because they connect the virtual world with the real world. People have a real affinity for faces. If you are worried about privacy, a cartoon or character drawing may work just as well.

The less you hide, the more your readers will be able to get to know you and identify with your life.
